As of December 15, 2025, the Justice Institute of British Columbia stopped issuing Basic Security Training certificates directly. You can still train through JIBC, with the province verifying completion with them, or through an Approved Security Training School. Which path applies to your registration is worth confirming before you enroll, since the province's own page flags this as a recent change.

The training itself is 40 hours under the Security Services Act. The exam that follows is multiple choice, computerized, closed book, and more than closed book: notes, dictionaries, web browsers, and AI tools including ChatGPT are all explicitly named as prohibited. That's a specific enough line to see in an exam policy that it signals what's being tested, genuine retained knowledge, not your ability to look something up in the moment.

You need more than 60% to pass. The material covers what you'd expect from a 40-hour licensing course: legal authorities and limitations, emergency response, conflict de-escalation, report writing, and professional conduct standards under BC's Security Services Act.

A short list of what's actually worth double-checking before test day:

• Which training path (JIBC or approved school) applies to your registration
