A manual fire alarm can be activated by using a "pull station", typically a red or orange lever/plunger that is mounted on a wall. It should be located near the exits of a building and should be used when there is an actual fire emergency. While calling 911 is also a correct action to take in the event of a fire, it is not the way to activate a manual fire alarm. Additionally, while a large amount of smoke may indicate a fire, it does not necessarily mean that a manual fire alarm will be activated automatically. Breaking the glass of a fire extinguisher casing is also not a correct way to activate a manual fire alarm. It may damage the extinguisher and waste a potentially useful tool for extinguishing a fire.
